Embracing Support and Awareness with TTASMS

As the summer sun shines brightly over Mississippi, The Tourette, Tics, and Anxiety Society of Mississippi (TTASMS) is excited to share updates, resources, and inspiration for our community. August is a time for reflection and preparation as families gear up for the new school year, and we’re here to support individuals and families affected by Tourette Syndrome (TS), tic disorders, and anxiety. Let’s dive into how we can make this month meaningful and empowering!

Back-to-School Tips for Managing Tics and Anxiety

With the school year approaching, many families in our community may be navigating the challenges of managing tics and anxiety in the classroom. Here are some practical tips to help students thrive:

Open Communication with Educators: Share information about TS and tic disorders with teachers and school staff. Our friends at the Tourette Association of America offer free resources, like educator guides, to foster understanding in the classroom. Request a 504 Plan or IEP to ensure accommodations, such as extra time for assignments or a quiet space to manage tics.

Practice CBIT Strategies: Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) can be a game-changer. This evidence-based therapy teaches competing responses to reduce tic severity. For example, if a student has a coughing tic, they might practice breathing in through the mouth and out through the nose. Reach out to a CBIT-trained therapist in Mississippi—our state’s only multidisciplinary Tourette’s clinic at UMMC’s Center for the Advancement of Youth in Jackson is a great starting point.

Manage Anxiety: Anxiety often amplifies tics, creating a challenging cycle. Encourage relaxation techniques like deep breathing or mindfulness exercises. TTASMS offers support groups where families can share coping strategies. Stay tuned for our upcoming webinar on anxiety management in September!

Community Spotlight: Stories of Resilience

This month, we’re inspired by the stories shared on platforms like TicTastic, where young advocates like Wilamena, a musician with TS and OCD, raise awareness through their experiences. Her journey reminds us of the power of community and self-advocacy. We invite our members to share their stories with TTASMS—whether through our new podcast or blog—to inspire others and reduce stigma.

A Call to Action: Spread Awareness

August is a perfect time to educate our communities about TS, tic disorders, and anxiety. Did you know that 1 in 100 school-aged children may have TS or a tic disorder, and over 50% experience co-occurring anxiety? By sharing resources and starting conversations, we can reduce misunderstandings and create inclusive environments. Visit our website for downloadable fact sheets and follow us on social media to amplify our message.
